Getty Foundation Scholar Grant
Dear Readers,
Application for Getty Foundation scholar grant for the 2024/2025 is on. The Program provides financial assistance to researchers who are working to expand their knowledge of the arts and humanities and produce innovative study that adds to the betterment of our ability to appreciate and care for our cultural heritage.
During their time at the residence, academics have the chance to spend a significant amount of time at one of the most important art history collections in the world while also participating to an international community that is dedicated to the intellectual study and exchange of ideas.
It is possible for academics to take up residence at either the Getty Center or the Getty Villa. In this article, We shall explain the structure, the annual theme extension and the process of the grant.
Structure of the Program
For each intake of the Scholars Program, a diverse group of senior scholars and junior fellows are chosen to participate. The research projects that are being done by the cohort are centered on an annual theme. The following are the three primary types of grant awards:
- Scholar Grants are available at the Getty Center and Getty Villa for established researchers and professionals who have held PhDs for at least 5 years and/or maintain good histories of publication and professional involvement.
- Getty Center and Getty Villa are offering postdoctoral fellowships to those who have recently been awarded a PhD.
- Predoctoral Fellowships are available at the Getty Center for students working toward their PhDs.
Annual Theme Extension
The visualization, capture, and interpretation of transitory, fleeting, and irretrievable components of culture are all within the purview of the artistic community, and they have the potential to help prevent the loss of cultural traditions.
The Getty Scholars Program is currently accepting proposals on the urgent topic of extinction and the impact it has on cultural heritage and the visual arts. This call comes at a time when the environment is in a state of catastrophic deterioration and massive epidemic loss.
Scholars are challenged to consider how representational techniques are used to cope with the precarious survival of plants, animals, and humans; the ever-present dread of species-level extinction and resource exhaustion; and, at the most extreme pole, the savagery of mass atrocity.
All of these threats are intertwined with one another and threaten the very existence of all living things on Earth, including humans. On another level, atrophy, decay, and obsolescence comprise the temporal dimensions of certain artistic practices, particularly as creative methods, technologies, media, formats, and ideals become antiquated or surpassed. This is especially the case as artistic practices, media, formats, and ideals become more digitalized.
The finality of disappearance may also be interpreted as a sign of some hope for rebirth, creativity, or recovery in the future.
This year’s theme encourages research projects that investigate not only what has been lost but also the compelling need to preserve and secure something for the foreseeable future.
The theme also tries to investigate the creative and productive possibilities that may be enabled by extinction, in addition to concepts such as loss, destruction, or mortality.
Grant
Scholar Grant grantees at the Getty Center have the option of staying in residence for anywhere between three and nine months, during which time they are awarded one of several different stipends, as mentioned below:
- Stipend of $21,500 and a residential commitment of three months (September–December/January–March).
- Stipend of $43,000 and a residency that lasts for six months (September–March/January–June).
- A stipend in the amount of $65,000 and a residency that lasts from September until June.
Possibility of eligibility
- Candidates for the Scholar Grant need to have a doctoral degree in hand before September 1, 2020.
- Applicants from related fields who do not have a PhD but have professional experience comparable to the position’s requirements will also be evaluated.
- Postdoctoral Fellowship applications should be submitted by candidates who have acquired their degrees on or after September 1, 2020.
Application
- The submission period will begin on July 1, 2023 and continue through October 2, 2023. In order to be considered for a Getty Scholar Grant, applicants need to meet the following requirements, which must be included to their online application forms before the deadline.
- The following should be included in your project proposal (no more than five pages total, typed and double-spaced): Include a detailed explanation of the prospective student’s suggested course of academic study. In the description, you should explain how the project relates to the yearly subject and how it could make use of the Getty’s resources, such as its library and collection of artifacts.
